Viet Nam

When: 2017–2018

Purpose: Support sustainable growth, environmental protection, natural-resource management, and proactive climate response.

What happened: The project centered on NDC & mitigation pathways, water security, land-use implications, climate resilience, and water stress points such as Mekong Delta saline intrusion or the Central Highlands. A spatial water-energy-food model represented Viet Nam through northern, central, and southern regions. Priority crops included cassava, coffee, maize, paddy rice, sugarcane, vegetables, and fruits, with rainfed & irrigated systems represented under low, intermediate, and high management.

Key insights:

  • Management & irrigation can transform yields: for example, cassava production triples from 3 t/ha under rainfed, low management to 10 t/ha under irrigated, high management.
